요약
The combination of a push for higher growth, the energy transition and historic underinvestment mean a huge uplift in capital investment is both needed and expected across large parts of the UK economy. In many ways, this is a huge opportunity for the UK. This level of increase has not been seen in the UK for 75 years. There is, rightly, much focus on how this will be financed and whether our planning system can be reformed to avoid it stopping this wave of investment before it even gets going. Important steps are being taken to address both of these issues. But too few have asked whether our supply chains can actually deliver this investment. As it stands, the answer is no. If they can’t, the result will be delays, cost inflation and a poor allocation of resources leading to missed opportunities. Thankfully, there is still time to address some of the underlying issues and avoid such an outcome.
