본 논문의 목적은 두 가지로 요약될 수 있다. 첫째는 동아시아에서 진행되고 있는 경제통합을 a) 역내금융협력, b) 동아시아 역내 국가들 간의 다기한 FTA와 역외 국가들과의 연계 확장현상, c) 한?일 양국이 지난 20년 동안 경험한 구조변화 및 그에 따른 도전적 과제들을 조명하는 데 있다. 두 번째 목적은 한?일 양국이 역내에서 가장 선진화 된 시장경제를 지닌 국가로서 양자간 공식적 FTA가 발효될 때까지 지연하지 말고 협력적 양자간 FDI를 활성화하여야 한다는 제안을 하는 데 있다.
