Iran holds some of the world’s largest oil and natural gas reserves, and crude oil and natural gas production growth remains limited because of international sanctions and underinvestment. However, Iran’s crude oil production increased after 2020 after global oil demand returned to pre-COVID-19 levels and China began to import more discounted crude oil from Iran.
