Building the Future Transmission Grid Building on the analysis Electricity Grids and Secure Energy Transitions, this report identifies actionable strategies to address challenges related to the supply chain for grid infrastructure, with a focus on transmission lines with voltages that exceed 66 kilovolts. It highlights growing constraints in the supply chain, the need for long-term procurement mechanisms, and the importance of coordinated planning to ensure timely infrastructure development. The findings serve as a guide for policymakers, regulators and industry leaders to navigate the complex landscape of transmission expansion and modernisation in the clean energy transition. 2025.02

Uplift in Demand, Shortfall in Supply: Can the UK Deliver on Its Infrastructure Investment Ambitions? The combination of a push for higher growth, the energy transition and historic underinvestment mean a huge uplift in capital investment is both needed and expected across large parts of the UK economy. In many ways, this is a huge opportunity for the UK. This level of increase has not been seen in the UK for 75 years. There is, rightly, much focus on how this will be financed and whether our planning system can be reformed to avoid it stopping this wave of investment before it even gets going. Important steps are being taken to address both of these issues. But too few have asked whether our supply chains can actually deliver this investment. As it stands, the answer is no. If they can’t, t 2025.02

How the Energy Secretary Can Achieve His Goal of Next-Generation Nuclear Energy Deployment If the new secretary of energy decides to make significant investments in nuclear energy development, he could pursue two initiatives this commentary discusses that focus on supporting and accelerating promising developments in nuclear energy. First, negotiations with TVA could advance its SMR project that has been in development but is not yet in construction, and in the process help create a new reactor option that could be deployed by US utilities and other nations. Second, Secretary Wright could partner with private high temperature reactor consortiums involving hyperscalers and industrial entities in a similar payment-for-milestones manner used by NASA with SpaceX. Both initiatives coul 2025.02

Navigating risks to unlock 500 GW of renewables by 2030 India stands at a pivotal moment in its renewable energy journey, with an ambitious target of 500 GW by 2030 requiring significant investment. Achieving this scale hinges not only on the availability of capital but also on ensuring it is available at a low cost. Attracting low-cost capital is critical on two fronts: enabling the development of renewable energy infrastructure at the required scale and ensuring that the promise of affordable renewable electricity is realised. 2025.02

Angola Country Analysis Angola was the second-largest total liquid fuels producer in sub-Saharan Africa, after Nigeria, in 2024 production. Angola's economy is largely based on hydrocarbon production, making it vulnerable to crude oil price swings. Angola primarily consumes hydroelectricity and fossil fuel-derived fuel sources to meet its domestic needs for power generation 2025.02

Europe’s cobalt supply security outlook and the potential role of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Europe needs more cobalt to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, feed its growing lithium-ion battery industry, and secure its green industrial competitiveness. This research paper asks whether Europe can rapidly and realistically increase cobalt supply security through domestic cobalt production and non-Chinese supply diversification, in particular through cooperation with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), one of the European Union (EU)’s strategic CRM partners and the leading global cobalt producer. 2025.02

Can the Arctic be a significant contributor of critical minerals for the global energy transition? The period beyond the mid-2030s is when the Arctic regions could possibly start to provide a greater share of global supplies of critical minerals. The speed at which this takes place will depend on factors such as the rate of growth of demand for different critical minerals, the economic competitiveness of critical mineral supplies from Arctic regions compared with those from the rest of the world, and the scale of government and societal support. The exact locations of the mines will vary between minerals, but Russia and Canada are likely to feature strongly for several minerals on account of their geographic size. Other countries may become regionally important suppliers for specific mine 2025.02

Oil Markets in 2025: Divergence in narrative While Trump 2.0 policies are creating uncertainties, the impacts on growth and oil demand may not to be felt this year. Also, potential demand impacts could be offset by supply factors such as geopolitical disruptions, more cohesive and proactive OPEC+, and a repeat of the 2024 non-OPEC+ performance to mention few factors. Only couple of months into 2025, these moving parts and uncertainties are already starting to change the dominant narrative of an oil glut. 2025.02

Study on energy prices and costs - Evaluating impacts on households and industry : 2024 This 2024 edition of the energy prices and costs report follows a period of exceptional turbulence on global and European energy markets since 2020. The sustained period of high energy prices has had, and despite prices returning towards pre-crisis levels, continues to have, serious implications for European households, industry, the broader economy and public finances. The purpose of this report is to objectively analyse energy price, cost and other data to provide a clear understanding of the changes in prices and their drivers, and the impact of these changes on energy costs for EU industry and households, EU energy imports and energy taxes. 2025.02

Fiscal and macroprudential policies during an energy crisis We construct a New-Keynesian E-DSGE model with energy disaggregation and financial intermediaries to show how energy-related fiscal and macroprudential policies interact in affecting the euro area macroeconomy and carbon emissions. When a shock to the price of fossil resources propagates through the energy and banking sector, it leads to a surge in inflation while lowering output and carbon emissions, absent policy interventions. By contrast, imposing energy production subsidies reduces both CPI and core inflation and increases aggregate output, while energy consumption subsidies only lower CPI inflation and reduce aggregate output. Carbon subsidies instead produce an intermediate effect. Gi 2025.02

Energy consumption and energy efficiency trends in the EU, 2000-2022 This report discusses the latest status of the energy consumption trends in the European Union (EU), focusing on the four main energy-consuming sectors: residential, tertiary, transport, and industry. During the last few years, there have been notable efforts by the EU to cut energy consumption and improve energy efficiency, as outlined in the energy consumption targets for 2020 and 2030. The report explores the energy consumption progress from 2000 to 2022. Trends in this period may have been affected by three significant events: the financial and economic crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine. Special focus is drawn on changes in the use of electricity and natural gas, as w 2025.02
