서울대학교 경제학과를 졸업하고 영국 케임브리지대학교에서 경제학 석사 및 박사 학위를 받았다. 1990년 한국인으로서는 최초로 케임브리지대학교에 임용되어 경제학과 교수로 근무했으며, 2022년부터 런던대학교 경제학과 교수로 재직 중이다. 2003년 신고전학파 경제학에 대안을 제시한 경제학자에게 주는 군나르 뮈르달 상을, 2005년 경제학의 지평을 넓힌 경제학자에게 주는 바실리 레온티예프 상을 최연소로 수상함으로써 세계적인 경제학자로 명성을 얻었다. 2014년에는 영국의 정치 평론지 『프로스펙트』가 매년 선정하는 ‘올해의 사상가 50인...
